Course evaluation bounds and response rate

Just received my course evaluation for a capstone course in the second semester (of academic year 2017-18). 12 out of 25 students (48%) submitted their evaluation. On teacher's effectiveness, I got an average of 89.6 (0 for strongly disagree, 25 for disagree, 50 for neutral, 75 for agree, 100 for strongly agree). I also got some written comments.

Imagine all those students who did not respond were to give me strongly disagree, my average score would have been 43.0 (89.6*12/25). If they were to give me strongly agree, my average score would have been 95 ((89.6*12+100*13)/25).

So, at least in the capstone course, I am a teacher of possible effectiveness in the range of 43 to 95.

This is a fact. I have no judgement on this.

To see the impact of response rate, suppose we have a course with class size of 110 and response by 40 students. The teacher got a perfect score of 100. If we take into account of response rate (36.4%), we have the possible range from 36.4 to 100.

This course has a lower bound lower than mine. Why? It is all about the lower response rate. That is, supposedly, a higher response rate would have helped narrow the range/bounds.

That is why I do hope more students would help fill in their course evaluation, in order to make it more informative. Whether you like the teacher or not, please help fill in the course evaluation form!

Of course, as always, written comments are especially welcome. Written comments are most useful in improving the teacher's performance in the future.

Better, if you can suggest to your teachers how they can improve their teaching in the middle of the semester.
